Lyft vs Uber first-ride promo codes: which one saves more right now

Rides aren't food, but the same people ask, and the new-rider codes behave exactly like the food ones: one per phone number, card and address, and nothing public for existing riders. Here's what each app is offering new riders as of this writing, and how they compare.

The offers, as the apps show them

Uber Lyft
New-rider offer 30% off your first trip 50% off your first 2 rides
Cap $8 $10 per ride, $20 total
Code the app shows RIDEUBER2026FT riderdiscount1
Where to enter it Account, Wallet, Add promo code Menu, Rewards, Enter promo code

I've read these off the apps' own sign-up screens. I haven't yet run the two codes through to a paid ride myself, so treat the table as what Uber and Lyft are advertising, not as my test result. When I have, it'll be on the Uber and Lyft pages.

Lyft's offer is bigger on paper at every fare. 50% off beats 30% off, and Lyft's $10 cap beats Uber's $8 cap. A $20 ride is $10 off on Lyft and $6 off on Uber. A $10 ride is $5 off on Lyft and $3 off on Uber.

On two rides it isn't close. Lyft's offer covers a second ride at the same discount, up to $20 total. Uber's ends after one trip at $8.

Long rides hit the caps. Lyft's cap kicks in at a $20 fare, Uber's at about $27. Above those, the saving stops growing. If you have one long airport ride and nothing else, the difference is $10 against $8.

The catches

  • Uber Eats history counts. Uber rides and Uber Eats share one account. If you've ordered Uber Eats, you're not a new Uber rider. This is the one that catches most people.
  • Both apps match on phone number, card and address, not email. A new email on the same phone gets "not eligible".
  • City-locked codes. Many ride codes you'll find online are for one city, and the error looks the same as an expired code. If a code on my page lists a city, that's where it was checked.
  • Offers expire. Both apps put an expiry on the offer once it's added to the account. The date shows in the app. Add the code the day you plan to ride, not weeks before.

Existing riders

Neither app publishes codes for existing riders. What works instead:

  • The Rewards or Promotions tab. Both apps push targeted offers to existing accounts there. They're account-specific, so I can't list them, but check before you ride.
  • Lyft's Wait and Save option (wait a few extra minutes for a cheaper fare) takes a chunk off the fare with no code.
  • Uber One gives a discount on eligible rides and covers Uber Eats delivery fees. $9.99 a month, with a free first month for new members.
  • Lyft Pink has had a free trial and has come bundled with Chase Sapphire Reserve. Check the card's benefits page; the terms change.
  • Discounted Uber gift cards from resellers sometimes sell below face value, and a gift card pays for any ride.

What I'd do

New to both? Use Lyft's two half-price rides first, since the offer is bigger, and keep Uber's 30% for a ride where Lyft's price is worse. Already on both? Check the Rewards tab before each ride and toggle Wait and Save when you're not in a hurry. The current codes, checked as I test them, are on the Uber and Lyft pages.
