Lyft promo code not working? Four reasons, and where the code actually goes

Lyft shows the discount on the fare estimate before you request. If the estimate doesn't drop, the code didn't take, whatever the app said when you entered it. Here are the reasons, in the order they're usually the problem.

1. You've ridden with Lyft before

New-rider codes match your phone number and your card. A new email doesn't make a new rider, and neither does a new phone if the card has paid Lyft before. If you've ever taken a Lyft, the new-rider codes on my Lyft page will fail, and the ones to try are the existing-rider ones, which Lyft runs more of than Uber does.

2. Wrong city

Ride codes are often locked to one city or one promotion's markets. A code from a Chicago page fails in Dallas with the same message as a dead code. When a code on my page has a city next to it, that's where it applied; "any city" means I haven't seen it fail, which isn't the same as everywhere.

3. You've used the new-rider offer already

Lyft's new-rider offer covers exactly two rides, at 50% off up to $10 each. On the third ride it's gone, and a second new-rider code won't restart it. From then on, Lyft Pink and the in-app ride discounts are what's left.

4. It expired

Check the "checked" time at the top of my Lyft page. If it's from yesterday, I haven't retested today and you may be early. Lyft codes tied to events, like the election-day polling-place code, also stop working at the end of that day.

Where the code goes

This is the one people miss. Open the menu in the top left, tap Rewards, then Enter promo code, and add it before you request the ride. There's no code box on the request screen itself. Once it's in, the discount shows on the fare estimate.

The surge catch

Most Lyft ride discounts don't apply during surge pricing, or apply to the base fare only. If the estimate is high and the code seems to have done nothing, check whether the fare has a surge note. Waiting ten minutes sometimes saves more than the code would have.

If you've been through all four and it still fails, send me the code and your city. I'll try it on a new-rider account and an old one, and update the page the same morning. Comparing Lyft and Uber for a first ride? That post is here.
