Grubhub+ is free with Amazon Prime, and it takes two minutes to turn on

This is the best delivery deal most people leave on the table. Amazon Prime includes Grubhub+, the membership that otherwise costs $9.99 a month and removes delivery fees on Grubhub orders over $12 while lowering the service fee. Not a trial. It lasts as long as you keep Prime. Amazon doesn't push it very hard, so it's easy to have Prime for years and never hear about it.

What you get

As of this writing, Grubhub+ through Prime is the same membership Grubhub sells on its own:

  • $0 delivery fees on orders of $12 or more from Grubhub+ restaurants, which is most of them.
  • Lower service fees than a non-member pays.
  • Grubhub credit back on pickup orders.
  • The Grubhub+ badge in the app and member-only Perks.

The delivery fee is the big one. It's a flat line on every order, so the saving is the same whether you order a $14 sandwich or a $60 family dinner. The service fee is a percentage of the subtotal, so the member discount on it grows with the order.

How to turn it on (two minutes)

  1. Go to amazon.com/grubhub in a browser where you're signed in to your Prime account.
  2. Click Activate Grubhub+.
  3. Sign in to Grubhub, or create an account if you don't have one. Use the same email you'll order with.
  4. Open the Grubhub app. In Account, the Grubhub+ badge now shows, and the next qualifying order's delivery fee is $0.

If you already pay for Grubhub+ separately, cancel that first (Account, then Grubhub+, then Manage), then activate through Amazon. Otherwise you're paying for something Prime already covers.

Things to know

  • It stays active as long as Prime does. Cancel Prime and Grubhub+ ends with it.
  • Seamless counts. Seamless is Grubhub with a different name in some cities, and the membership works there too.
  • It stacks with promo codes. A code takes money off the food; Grubhub+ removes the delivery fee. They touch different lines on the receipt, so there's no reason a member can't use both. The current codes are on the Grubhub page.
  • It doesn't remove the service fee entirely, and it doesn't change menu prices. "Free delivery" on any app means the delivery line, not the whole fee section.
  • Prime Student. Amazon's activation page lists Prime Student as eligible as of this writing. If you're on Student, try the same link.

Why this matters more than any code

Codes come and go. When I tested Grubhub codes today, five applied, including GH25OFF (25% off an order of $15 or more) and WSJ50 (50% off a first order on a new account). Some of those will be gone in a few weeks, and a new-account code only works once. Grubhub+ through Prime doesn't expire, applies to every order over $12, and costs nothing extra. If you have Prime and order from Grubhub even once a month, do this today.
