The cheapest way to order delivery in 2026 (it's usually not a promo code)

I run a site about promo codes, so this is an awkward post to write. If you line up every way to save on a delivery order and ask which one takes the most off a normal order, the promo code is not at the top. It's about fourth. Here's the ranking as I see it, and what each method means in practice.

Ranked by what it's worth on a typical order

  1. Pickup instead of delivery. Removes the delivery fee and the service fee entirely.
  2. A membership you already have. DashPass, Grubhub+, Uber One or Instacart+ through a card or subscription you already pay for.
  3. The Offers or Deals tab in each app. Personal, restaurant-specific discounts that change often.
  4. Promo codes. Big for a new account, small and rare for an existing one.
  5. Discounted gift cards. A few percent off everything, and it stacks with the rest.
  6. Win-back offers. Stop ordering for a while and the app tries to tempt you back.
  7. In-app coupons. Instacart's clipped coupons on individual products.

The order matters more than any exact figure, which depends on your city, the restaurant and the night.

1. Pickup

Every fee disappears: delivery, service, and the small-order fee if there was one. You still pay the app's menu price, which can be higher than the restaurant's own, but on a normal order the fees are the bigger part. DoorDash has also been giving DashPass members a small credit back on pickup orders as of this writing. If the restaurant is close, nothing else on this list comes near.

2. Memberships you already have

A lot of people pay for DashPass, Grubhub+, Uber One or Instacart+ while holding a card or subscription that includes one. Some Chase cards include DashPass; Amazon Prime includes Grubhub+; a few cards cover Uber One for a stretch. DashPass and Uber One each cost $9.99 a month as of this writing, and Instacart+ is $9.99 a month or $99 a year, so it's worth five minutes on a benefits page before you pay any of that.

3. The Offers tab

Each app's personal offers (DoorDash Offers, Uber Eats Deals, Grubhub Perks, Instacart Offers) are the real existing-customer deals. They're tied to your account and to specific restaurants, and they change often. Checking before you choose the restaurant, rather than after, is the whole trick.

4. Promo codes

If you're genuinely new to an app, the first-order offer is the single best deal on this list. Uber Eats takes $15 off a first order of $20 or more as of this writing, and Instacart's WELCOME15 took $15 off when I tried it today. For existing accounts, codes are smaller and rarer, which is why they're fourth. Grubhub is the bright spot right now: GH25OFF applied for 25% off an order of $15 or more when I tested it this morning. The codes that work are on the app pages every morning: DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, Instacart.

5. Discounted gift cards

Warehouse clubs and gift-card resellers sell DoorDash and Uber cards below face value, usually a few percent to around ten percent off. It's a way of paying, not a promotion, so it stacks with everything above. Where to buy them.

6. Win-back offers

Stop ordering for a few weeks and the app usually sends an offer to come back. Great if you can wait. I can't, usually.

7. In-app coupons

Instacart only. Coupon tags on products, clipped like paper coupons. Small but free.

What I'd tell a friend

Check the Offers tab, order pickup if it's close, make sure you're not paying for a membership a card already gives you, and then look for a code. In that order. The code is the last step, not the first.
